Mit dem Video zur Single „No Halo“ kündigt Kevin Morby für Ende April sein neues Doppelalbum „Oh My God“ an. Mit dem üppigen neuen Album liefert Morby einen grandiosen Director’s Cut seiner bisher größten Aussage, sowohl episch im Umfang als auch im Sound, ab. Im Juni wird Kevin Morby beim Mannheimer Maifeld Derby zu sehen sein.
„Oh My God“ ist ein Werk, das mit Fug und Recht als bisheriger Höhepunkt seines Schaffens bezeichnet werden darf. In seiner bisherigen Arbeit hat er die Allgegenwart eines offensichtlichen religiösen Themas bemerkt. Obwohl Morby sich nicht im Geringsten als „religiös“ identifiziert, erkennt er in sich selbst ein spirituelles Wesen mit einer weltlichen Einstellung zum Seelenvollen. Und so setzte er sich in dem Bestreben, diesen Gedanken frontal und ein für alle Mal anzugehen, in seinen persönlichen Kirchen – Flugzeuge und Betten – hin und schrieb, was sein erstes wahres Konzeptalbum werden sollte.
„Religion is around all of us,” erzählt Kevin Morby. „It’s a universal language and there is profound beauty in it. I’ve found it a useful tool within songwriting, as it’s something everyone can relate to on some level. There are religious themes or imagery in a lot of what I’ve done, so I wanted to get all of that out and speak only that language for a whole record. It’s not a born-again thing; it’s more that ‘oh my god’ is such a profound statement we all use multiple times a day and means so many different things. It’s not about an actual god but a perceived one, and it’s an outsider’s view of the human experience in terms of religion.”
