Mit dem Video zur Single „Fire“ kündigt Waxahatchee ihr neues Album „Saint Cloud“ an
Katie Crutchfield alias Waxahatchee hat ein neues Album angekündigt: „Saint Cloud“ wird am 27. März auf Merge Records erscheinen. Zeitgleich zur Ankündigung präsentiert die Indie-Songwriterin das Video zur Single „Fire“.
„Saint Cloud“ wurde im Sommer 2019 aufgenommen und von Brad Cook produziert. Während die letzten beiden gefeierten Alben „Out In The Storm“ (2017) und „Ivy Trip“ (2015) noch von lärmenden Gitarren bestimmt waren, streift das fünfte Album von Waxahatchee diese „Wall Of Sound“ Schicht für Schicht ab, um Platz für Crutchfields Stimme und Texte zu schaffen. Das Ergebnis ist ein Album geworden, das von klassischen Americana-Sounds durchwoben ist, aber mit einem modernen Touch. Auf „Saint Cloud“ präsentiert sich Crutchfield erneut als eine der talentiertesten Geschichtenerzählerinnen der Gegenwart und sitzt so selbstsicher im Songwriter-Sattel wie noch nie zuvor.
Mit unerschütterlicher Ehrlichkeit unterzieht sich Crutchfield auf „Saint Cloud“ einer offenen Selbstprüfung. Das Album ist unmittelbar nach Crutchfields Entschluss nüchtern zu werden entstanden. Das schlägt sich auch klanglich in einer klareren und traditionelleren Ausrichtung des Albums nieder: „I think all of my records are turbulent and emotional, but this one feels like it has a little dose of enlightenment. It feels a little more calm and less reckless“, gibt die Musikerin zu Protokoll.
Lyrisch widmet sich Crutchfield auf „Saint Cloud“ dem Thema Sucht und behandelt die negativen Folgen, die diese bei uns und unseren Lieben anrichtet. Auch musikalisch beschreitet Crutchfield neues Terrain, wie sich jetzt in der soeben veröffentlichten Lead-Single „Fire“ nachhören lässt, die Stereogum als „groovy and intricately layered and warm, unlike anything Crutchfield has put out with this project before“ beschreibt.
Waxahatchee kommentiert die erste Auskopplung „Fire“ wie folgt: „The idea and melody for ‚Fire‘ was dreamt up while driving over the Mississippi River from Memphis into West Memphis, AR, sun reflecting off the water which literally made West Memphis glow. The song’s written by me, to myself. It’s about the internal dialogue of shame surrounding mistakes you’ve made in the past and how we spiral and beat ourselves up when we slip. It’s meant to be a bit of a personal pep talk. If I can love myself unconditionally, then I can move through the world a little easier. If I can accept that I only have a partial view of the universe, and that I can’t know everything or control much of anything, then I can breathe a little easier, take better care of myself, and be closer to my own truth.“
