Mit dem Video zur Single „Processed By The Boys“ kündigen Protomartyr ihr neues Album an: „Ultimate Success Today“ – das fünfte Album der Band aus Detroit – wird am 29. Mai erscheinen.
„In der Poesie von „Ultimate Success Today“ herrscht Dunkelheit. Das Thema vom Ende der Dinge, vor allem der menschlichen Existenz, ist darauf omnipräsent. Manch einen wird es an Cormac McCarthys „The Road“ erinnern. Unsere Welt hat einen Punkt erreicht, der uns Angst macht: Waldbrände, Überschwemmungen, Erdbeben, Hunger, Krieg, Intoleranz… da sind Schreie der Verzweiflung. Gibt es Hoffnung? Gier ist die Krankheit, die das Leben in Gefahr bringt.“ Das schreibt Ana Da Silva, ihres Zeichens Gründungsmitglied der legendären Punkband The Raincoats und enge Freundin der Band Protomartyr in ihrem Testimonial über das neue Album des Detroiter Postpunk-Quartetts.
„Ultimate Success Today“ wurde in den Dreamland Recording Studios, einer Kirche aus dem späten 19. Jahrhundert im Norden des Staates New York, aufgenommen. Die Kirche verfügt noch immer über ihre ursprünglichen hohen Gewölbedecken, womit ein natürlicher und beizeiten unheimlicher Hall eingefangen werden konnte. Die Band koproduzierte die neuen Songs zusammen mit David Tolomei, der schon für John Cale, Dirty Projectors, Girlpool und Lower Dens arbeitete. Zu den Gastmusikern des Albums gehören Nandi Rose (Gesang) alias Half Waif, die Jazz-Legende Jemeel Moondoc (Altsaxophon), Izaak Mills (Bassklarinette, Saxophon, Flöte) und Fred Lonberg-Holm (Violoncello).
Über das neue Album sagt Sänger Joe Casey nun: „The re-release of our first album (2019 erschien dasbis dato lange vergriffenes Debütalbum „No Passion All Technique“ bei Domino als Reissue. Anm. d. Red.) had me thinking about the passage of time and its ultimate conclusion. Listening to No Passion All Technique again, I could hear myself hoping for an introduction and a long future, but also being cognizant that it could be ‘one and done’ for us. So, when it came time to write Ultimate Success Today, I was reminded of that first urgency and how it was an inverse of my current grapple with how terribly ill I’ve been feeling lately. Was that sick feeling colouring how I felt about the state of the world or was it the other way around?
This panic was freeing in a way. It allowed me to see our fifth album as a possible valediction of some confusingly loud five-act play. In the same light I see it as an interesting mile marker of our first decade of being a band – a crest of the hill along a long highway. Although just to cover my bases, I made sure to get my last words in while I still had the breath to say them.“
Das Video zu „Processed By The Boys“, das von David Allen und Nathan Faustyn unter der Regie von HLPTV & LooseMeat.Biz produziert wurde, ist die Parodie eines bizarren brasilianischen Fernsehclips, in den sich die Band verliebt hat. Ein Mann singt vor einem Studiopublikum, während ein Zuschauer von einer Marionette drangsaliert wird, was die ganze Situation in ein totales Chaos verwandelt.
